SUMMARY:New Models of Gap Funding
DESCRIPTION:* Event organized by Tech Transfer Central \nDuring 2021-2022\, Cornell embarked on a major expansion of its gap funding series\, committing $3 million a year to grow its innovation pipeline. But the Cornell story goes well beyond the top-line number. Underpinning the plan are three signature programs under the aptly named “Ignite” brand — all designed to fuel a major acceleration in start-ups\, scale-ups\, and innovation ecosystem growth. \n  \nThe three-pronged plan includes a proof-of-concept program already sporting early successes\, a unique new platform that integrates gap funding with acceleration programs\, and a novel initiative that pairs postdocs with high-potential new ventures – and pays them to help take those start-ups on the path to growth – in the process creating a new generation of entrepreneurs. \n  \nJoin Cornell’s tech transfer leader Alice Li\, Ph.D.\, CLP\, when she shares the details and early results of Ignite’s three signature programs: Ignite Innovation Acceleration\, Ignite Postdoc for Ventures\, and Ignite Startup Projects. She’ll provide insight into how each program was conceptualized\, organized\, funded and managed – and how the programs work in concert to increase start-up value and reach the next milestone event. \n  \nThis one-hour webinar will illustrate aspects that worked well – and some that didn’t – for the existing gap funding programs while covering key elements in designing pioneering new platforms that you can adapt in your own university’s start-up and innovation ecosystem growth plans. \n  \nHere is a quick look at the agenda: \n\n\n\nConcepts\, goals and criteria for the three signature programs:\n\nIgnite Innovation Acceleration\nIgnite Postdoc for Ventures\nIgnite Startup Projects\n\n\nMetrics to measure success of gap funding programs\n\n\n\n\nProcesses that contribute to advancement to the next inflection points\nLeveraging ecosystem development with the new platform design\nEarly results and lessons learned\n\n  \nPlus\, bring your questions to participate in the interactive Q&A portion of the program. \nAfter the live session\, keep the on-demand video for future training and education \n  \nRegister here!  \n\nMeet your presenter:\nAlice Li\, Ph.D.\, CLP\nExecutive Director\nCenter for Technology Licensing\nCornell University \nAlice oversees activities in technology management\, licensing\, marketing and finance to support Cornell’s goals in commercializing technologies\, promoting startups\, and building partnerships. Alice also leads the university gap funding series to accelerate innovation and new venture creation. \n  \nAlice has over 20 years of experience in university tech transfer and business development. She started as a licensing officer with hands-on management of invention portfolios\, negotiations of complex deals\, and engagement with startup companies. She rose through the ranks of CTL and became the Executive Director in 2014. Prior to joining CTL in 2002\, Alice was an R&D manager at BioArray Solutions\, a startup biotech company in diagnostics that was later acquired by Immucor. During her five-year tenure there\, the company grew from a two-person startup to an enterprise of fifty people. \n  \nAlice obtained her Ph.D. from Cornell University and a B.S. from Tsinghua University. She is also an inventor\, patent holder\, and author of research papers in scientific journals. She has been a Certified Licensing Professional since 2010 and is a Board Director of AUTM.

SUMMARY:CTL New Ventures Series – Pitching 101: How to Present Your Startups and Technology Innovation to Potential Funders
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand for CTL’s New Ventures Series this fall\, Kirsten Leute and Ajay Rayasam at Osage University Partners (OUP) focus the session on how an entrepreneur\, or a faculty-entrepreneur\, can develop and deliver a pitch to gain interest and commitment from potential investors. \nPitching an early-stage science- and technology-based startup to potential funders can be intimidating. Learning how to tailor your presentation and understanding what motivates funders to say yes\, or at least not give you an outright no\, are important aspects of preparing for your initial pitch. This talk is structured around OUP’s many years of experience in hearing pitches and reviewing pitch decks to provide insight on creating and presenting an initial startup pitch to funders. \nSpeakers: \n\nKirsten Leute\, Partner at OUP\nAjay Rayasam\, M.S.\, Associate\, Technology\, OUP\n\n  \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:The Inventor's Patent Academy
DESCRIPTION:Patents protect inventions so that inventors can focus on their work and be compensated for it. But many people don’t know how to navigate the patenting process\, or even where to start. \nThat’s why The Inventor’s Patent Academy was created. This free\, one-of-a-kind\, e-learning course aims to help people understand the patenting process and get them ready to apply for their own patent. It also explores challenges inventors may face along the way—particularly those that typically affect women\, people of color\, veterans\, low-income individuals\, people with disabilities\, and other underrepresented inventors—and provides advice to overcome them. Throughout the program\, participants will hear from actual inventors about the challenges they faced and their successes on their journeys to bring ideas to life. \nThis course is unique because it was made by inventors\, patent experts\, and—most importantly—diversity and inclusion experts\, in collaboration with Invent Together partner Qualcomm: one of America’s most innovative companies\, with a portfolio of more than 140\,000 patents. \nIf more people are encouraged to invent and have the tools and knowledge to patent\, we can begin to make real systemic change and build a more diverse and inclusive innovation ecosystem—complete with new inventors\, new ideas\, and new technologies. \nStart your patenting journey today! Register here. \n

SUMMARY:The OUP Exchange: Licensing Trends for Climate Tech Startups
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of the Virtual Exchange is to share best practices across a broad network and make connections in the tech transfer world. In this Exchange\, we’ll share best practices for licensing to climate tech startups\, including the following questions: \n\nGiven the ever-evolving climate tech landscape these past few years\, how have your licensing practices to these startups changed\, if at all? What are your pain points working with these startups? What are some best practices your office has implemented?\nHave royalty percentage amounts or structures changed recently in your climate tech startup licenses? What are some best practices you can share regarding structuring compensation for Licensed Product sales in climate tech licenses?\nAre you utilizing milestone payments as a different lever in your climate tech startup licenses? If so\, have these been to offset some or all earned royalty payments?\nHave these startups requested any interesting non-financial terms?\n\nBring your pain points and lessons learned pertaining to climate tech startup licensing. We’ll start out with a brief panel discussion addressing some of these questions\, followed by breakout rooms to talk through additional points\, and then a brief summary of the breakout discussions back in the main room. \nEach breakout room will have a moderator and scribe. The moderators will keep the discussions moving in the breakout rooms\, and the scribes will be responsible for summarizing the key findings of their breakout session and presenting them to the larger group. If you would like to volunteer for one of these positions\, please designate that on your registration form or email Jaimie Testai at jtestai@oup.vc. You are also welcome to send in advance to Jaimie any additional questions you would like to see discussed during the Exchange. \nCome discuss\, network\, and learn together on March 5th or 6th. We will run two sessions since we know not everyone can always make a specific date and time. \nWhile most of our programs are open to a broad swath of audiences\, the purpose of the Exchange is to share best practices in the academic tech transfer field and therefore is only open to individuals employed by our partner institutions’ Technology Commercialization Offices. \nRegistration
