SUMMARY:New Models of Gap Funding
DESCRIPTION:* Event organized by Tech Transfer Central \nDuring 2021-2022\, Cornell embarked on a major expansion of its gap funding series\, committing $3 million a year to grow its innovation pipeline. But the Cornell story goes well beyond the top-line number. Underpinning the plan are three signature programs under the aptly named “Ignite” brand — all designed to fuel a major acceleration in start-ups\, scale-ups\, and innovation ecosystem growth. \n  \nThe three-pronged plan includes a proof-of-concept program already sporting early successes\, a unique new platform that integrates gap funding with acceleration programs\, and a novel initiative that pairs postdocs with high-potential new ventures – and pays them to help take those start-ups on the path to growth – in the process creating a new generation of entrepreneurs. \n  \nJoin Cornell’s tech transfer leader Alice Li\, Ph.D.\, CLP\, when she shares the details and early results of Ignite’s three signature programs: Ignite Innovation Acceleration\, Ignite Postdoc for Ventures\, and Ignite Startup Projects. She’ll provide insight into how each program was conceptualized\, organized\, funded and managed – and how the programs work in concert to increase start-up value and reach the next milestone event. \n  \nThis one-hour webinar will illustrate aspects that worked well – and some that didn’t – for the existing gap funding programs while covering key elements in designing pioneering new platforms that you can adapt in your own university’s start-up and innovation ecosystem growth plans. \n  \nHere is a quick look at the agenda: \n\n\n\nConcepts\, goals and criteria for the three signature programs:\n\nIgnite Innovation Acceleration\nIgnite Postdoc for Ventures\nIgnite Startup Projects\n\n\nMetrics to measure success of gap funding programs\n\n\n\n\nProcesses that contribute to advancement to the next inflection points\nLeveraging ecosystem development with the new platform design\nEarly results and lessons learned\n\n  \nPlus\, bring your questions to participate in the interactive Q&A portion of the program. \nAfter the live session\, keep the on-demand video for future training and education \n  \nRegister here!  \n\nMeet your presenter:\nAlice Li\, Ph.D.\, CLP\nExecutive Director\nCenter for Technology Licensing\nCornell University \nAlice oversees activities in technology management\, licensing\, marketing and finance to support Cornell’s goals in commercializing technologies\, promoting startups\, and building partnerships. Alice also leads the university gap funding series to accelerate innovation and new venture creation. \n  \nAlice has over 20 years of experience in university tech transfer and business development. She started as a licensing officer with hands-on management of invention portfolios\, negotiations of complex deals\, and engagement with startup companies. She rose through the ranks of CTL and became the Executive Director in 2014. Prior to joining CTL in 2002\, Alice was an R&D manager at BioArray Solutions\, a startup biotech company in diagnostics that was later acquired by Immucor. During her five-year tenure there\, the company grew from a two-person startup to an enterprise of fifty people. \n  \nAlice obtained her Ph.D. from Cornell University and a B.S. from Tsinghua University. She is also an inventor\, patent holder\, and author of research papers in scientific journals. She has been a Certified Licensing Professional since 2010 and is a Board Director of AUTM.

SUMMARY:UIDP Xurban Cornell in Ithaca\, NY
DESCRIPTION:Innovation ecosystems thrive where ideas inspire collaborative partners to share an R&D vision. In the wake of the pandemic\, we’ve learned that innovation can surge wherever idea-driven people live and when a sense of urgency exists. Combined with renewed national interest and federal funding to establish innovation engines outside major metro areas\, we are poised to see new ecosystems grow where industry\, academia\, nonprofits\, and government combine forces and leverage each other’s assets to achieve outcomes not possible without cooperation. \n  \nThe result: new technology\, novel startup ventures\, and breakthrough solutions. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuilding on the work of the 2019 workshop\, you can view the report and workshop page for “U-I Engagement Outside Major Metropolitan Areas and Megacities.” UIDP Xurban Cornell will convene thought leaders from academic\, corporate\, government\, and non-profit sectors to consider practical and effective strategies. \n  \n\nThis workshop is in person and registration is required. \n\n\nRegister here.

SUMMARY:CTL@WCM Special Panel on Drug Repurposing
DESCRIPTION:Can you teach an old drug new tricks? Recent successes in repositioning existing drugs – from esketamine for treatment-resistant depression to remdesivir – originally developed to treat hepatitis C\, tested for Ebola before being approved as a treatment for COVID 19 – point to potential upsides. The challenges\, however\, are many: from challenging IP prospects to skeptical investors. We have assembled an expert panel to discuss with us the enticing shortcuts repurposing may offer\, the pitfalls it brings\, and how to develop strategies to overcome them. \nJoin us at the second virtual CTL@WCM Special Panel\, where innovators\, IP experts\, and regulators gather to assess the landscape and talk about the opportunities. \nFeatured panelists: \n\nDr. Bruce Bloom\, Chief Collaboration Officer\, Healx\nEyal Barash\, J.D.\, M.S\, Founder of Barash Law\nValentyna Chebanova\, Sr. Manager of Business Development at Tarsus Pharmaceuticals\n\nModerated by Lisa Placanica\, Senior Managing Director\, Center for Technology Licensing at Weill Cornell Medicine \n  \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:IP Series #3: Successful Patent Applications--It’s All in the Timing
DESCRIPTION:The right to be granted a patent for a given invention lies with the first person to file a fully-supported patent application. However\, rushing to the patent office does not necessarily lead to the best outcomes in patenting. Finding the perfect time to file a patent is a collaborative process between the inventor and CTL\, discovering a time that is not too early or too late.  In this third session of the IP Series\, we will discuss real-life examples of practical considerations in invention disclosure timing\, including enablement\, written description\, and prior art hazards in publishing scientific findings before patenting. Join us to consider the status of your research and successful timing. \n  \nFeaturing: \nPaul J. Roman\, J.D.\, Ph.D. Partner\, Johnson\, Marcou\, Issacs & Nix\, LLC.   \nCarin R. SUMMARY:A Plant License - AUTM Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:The anatomy of a plant license is different from that of a biotechnology\, pharmaceutical\, or medical devices license. Different types of intellectual property protect plants\, so drafting associated licenses can be challenging. The deal terms vary according to the type of license. Plants are a huge part of the earth’s ecosystem\, and understanding how they grow and eventually reach the market is attractive. Panelists will cover these issues. Join this session\, and you may even learn how the soybean made it to our dinner plates. \n  \nModerator: \nJill Link\, McKee\, Voorhees & Sease\, PLC \nSpeaker: \nThomas Herlache\, MSU Technolgies \nBrea Hutchcraft-May\, Bayer Crop Science \nJessica Stein\, Cornell University
